thinking about it a little more, this is actually less punishing to smite than the previously mentioned 3 max a turn... well not for brimstones, but I seriously have no sympathy for them. with this system and regular smites you at least have a CHANCE at casting up to seven a turn.
seven smites a turn is at the upper limit of what anyone would call a fun experience.
Also AOS has the exact same spell (although under no circumstances can you get D6 mortals) and it is only allowed to be cast once EVER a turn.
I think 8th edition messed up with Smite in general. The cheap easy mortal wound mechanic just leads to people spamming. In my opinion smite should have been either once like everything else or similar to the grey knights where it's one unsavable wound if you can just use it forever. And the grey knights should never gotten a flat 3 vs. daemons.
I say this playing four armies that use multiple smites. (my slaanesh daemons for example have zero shooting outside of smites, and my nurgle daemons nearly so - my Tzeentch daemons that I am in the process of building pretty much rely on smites to do anything, and my nid list uses multiple psykers casting smites all over the place!) and I STILL think mortal wound spam is bad for the game. It makes armies who cannot have psykers (or just one psyker) pretty much pull off models with no defense or recourse - which is NOT fun. At least shooting/combat you have a chance at mitigating damage, and eating 1-2 smites a turn isn't that bad. 10? geez why'd you even come out to play?
if you're lamenting that your army isn't any good because it cannot 5 charge cast 10 smites a turn I don't know what to say... this was the exact problem that the community here and at large wanted fixed. A few weeks ago before Secret Santa and chapter approved, we were talking about what we were going to do at tournies to combat mortal wound spam/malefic lords/brimstone spam etc.
