This edition as a whole seems particularly punishing to elite armies, especially with the proliferation of multi-damage weapons. On the flip side of that, those same elite models usually carry the multi-damage weapons, and the points you pay for the extra punch is wasted on the chaff units of hordes.
I think the most common way you'll see Custodes is in a separate detachment in another Imperial army.

Even though I have Grey Knights, I still think I would like to do a Custodian army as well.
I already have 15 of the Propero ones so I already have half an army 😋 add some jetbikes and a contemptor or tank and I'm set
Also the low model count will mean less painting to get a full army done which is appealing to a slow painter like me

I can't start Custodes. I can't get over the helmets. There. I said it.
I hate their stupid heads. If I wanted to play coneheads I'd play Eldar.

I've painted a lot of gold for the Sons.... enjoy that. Think yellow only with worse coverage.

Having painted 40 gold armoured High Elves in my day, I echo this. I trust you with painting stuff, but if you want some tips on what paints give good coverage, lemme know.

If I do decide to go with gold, I would probably do Retributor Armour from the can. I've seen first hand how awesome that stuff goes on.
That being said, I'm not a huge fan of conventional colour schemes, so I may be looking at something different.

Retributor gold (the paint in the pot - not the spray) is the only gold I use now for anything with more than spot colour. It covers fantastic. especially compared to the old versions!

Yah, the GW "Base" paints cover quite well. I've also had a lot of luck with the Vallejo metallics.

I had already planned on not going full gold.
The HH book Inferno shows a Custodian in Black armour with Gold/Silver trim which is what I was going for.
Of course the codex could feature other colour options too so have to see when it comes out

A small sept of Custodes that wear black with a single gold pauldron and red slash marks across the abdomen of their armor to mark the wound they couldn't stop the Emperor from receiving.

(just trying to improve the story!)

Totally possible; they flip to Chaos because they want to "end the suffering" of the Emperor, to finally kill him and crush the Golden Throne. They become traitors not because they they believe in Chaos, but because their own guilt twist their perception of right/wrong into an extreme opposition of the Custodes base values.
Edit: Aaron Dembski-Bowden; if you're reading this, all we ask for are some creative credits and a lifetime supply of free GW models. (value $2000 CAD/annum)

The Warders of the Vaults of Rython are the mostly black ones. I really like the Sentinals of the Lunar Gene Vault.
