So, purchased James' Orcs, because I was itching to get into Fantasy- but need to also purchase some rare and a few filler units here and there, so here's the first list I came up with to test out this Thursday (Hoping people are cool with me proxying a little since I wanna try out the few different things to see if they work out before buying the extras)
Lords
Lvl 4 Night Goblin Great Shaman Grimgor Ironhide
Heroes
Lvl 2 Orc Shaman Black Orc Big Boss (BSB, Talisman of Preserv. )
Core
Unit of 30 Night Goblins with FC, Mus, Banner and 2 Fanatics Unit of 24 Orc Boyz with Fc, Mus, Banner and 2x choppas Unit of 24 Orc Boyz with Fc, Mus, Banner and 2x choppas (Big 'uns)
Special
2x Goblin Spear Chukkas Unit of 20 Black orcs with FC, Mus, Banner (War Banner) and shields
Rare
2x Arachnarok Spiders
2384 points
Now this list is choppy and the spiders seem really neat so I'm wanting to try it out for sure. The Fanatics seem like a hoot, so am wanting to use those and the Night Gobby unit gives me a place to house my lvl 4. The big thing I'm wondering now is- does the rule of two seem to apply to the Arachnarok? Or is one enough? It'd free up some points for a 10 man unit of Orc Boar Boyz and maybe some more war machines but I am assuming you'd want two of these bad boys to make sure one will make it into combat with how much attention they'll draw.
How does it look? And be honest, are the 2 Arachnaroks really overkill?
Thanks,
Tom
Edit : Dropped the 1 fanatic and 1 spear chukka for big un's upgrades.

Overall, that looks like a pretty solid list with lots of combat power. The arachnaroks appear to be extremely tough, big monsters but it may take a few games to get a feel for how effective they truly are. Of particular note, I suspect with all their attacks & a thunderstomp tossed in at the end that they will be very nasty. Given they are T6, 8 wounds and have an armour save, even one may be a challenge for many armies to handle that don't have a lot of high strength attacks. On the other hand, you may need two just to get one across the board alive if you are facing a skaven/empire/dwarf gunline. Good news is if the spiders get shot up then the big blocks of infantry will make it across untouched!! Looking forward to seeing the list tomorrow and don't worry about the proxies.
PS - about the only change I might consider is dropping a spear chukka and fanatic to upgrade one unit of boyz to bigunz.

looks solid...
it's 8th ed... there's no overkill, lol.... two spiders are probably along the lines of my running two furnaces in my skaven army... if you don't run two, you just have one shot down dead quickly...
remember that bolt throwers are going to rip those spiders a new one as will any multiwound shooting such as cannons... so you're really going to need two as the model is WAY too big to hide or get any kind of cover... certain lists will blow them apart...
however my ogres will scream and run away as fast as their chubby little legs can take them!

In 8th it seems with any big nasty you have to take 2 since 1 will die fast. Your list looks similar to what I was toying around with if I were to start an O&G army Just minus the big spiders One day I will likely put together and then unleash the "Cavan' Waaaagh!"

Awesome, thanks for the replies. And yeah, dropping a spear chukka and a fanatic for Big 'uns upgrades sounds good, so will go ahead and do that as well.

Looks like it would be an interesting challenge for my dwarves.
Now as an O&G player I can't wait to see how effective even one arachnarok might be, as it too suffers the same fate (and bane) of majority of the army as it is only L6. Even though it's stubborn without a character this may be an issue. Don't know.
The other interesting changes for this army is the new animosity chart. So gone is the surging forward D6 on an animosity roll of 6 and now only a roll of 1 means that you fail. BUT now you roll again for the animosity chart which is as follows:
roll 1 - 'Get'em- inflict D6 S3 hits on the closest friendly unit of 5 or more models, that are subject to animosity and are within 12". the victim unit then inflicts 2D6 S3 hits back. In both instances, Hordes inflict 2D6 S3 hits instead of just D6. Neither unit can cjharge or move in the Movement phase, cast spells, nor shoot this turn. If the victim has not yet taken the animosity test, then it does not do so this turn. If there isn't an eligible victim then unit will Squabble instead.'
roll 2-5 -'Squabble - If it is possible to do so, the unit must declare a charge against the closest enemy unit in the Charge subphase. If the unit is unable to declare a charge, then a rowdy squabble breaks out and the unit may not move, cast spells nor shoot this turn.'
roll 6 - 'We'll Show 'Em - Pivot the unit on the spot to face the nearest visible enemy unit and then make a full (non-march) move in a straight line towards it. If there is no visible enemy unit, it will pivot towards it as far as it can and move forward keeping within the enemy's forward arc. the unit must now declare a Charge in the Charge subphase against the closest visible enemy unit. If it cannot declare a charge then it may carry on with the rest of its turn normally and if it had not yet moved.
All in all much more wackyness and could be difficult at times to obtain combo charges on enemy units. Should be fun to watch and play! ;D

Ha! Just read that the Spear Chukkas suffer from 'Slipshod- so on a roll of 1 to Hit its considered a misfire and you then have to roll on the Stone Thrower misfire chart. My oh my. More wonderful gobbo engineering!

Hey Tom... just wondering about your signature.... how long you going to be "new Tom"..... is it as long as you have the "new Tom smell" (AKA new car?) I don't think Old Tom is coming back from the maritimes anytime soon.... It's time... you can be Tom or maybe "the Tom" if that suits you better....? this is what happens when they make me work evenings at work.....
