After playing my Dwarf army in the last few weeks I was pondering over how the Dwarfs could get more mobility rather than simply moving towards the total gunline which is what I've been doing each week.
Last night I thought of Dogs of War after drooling over the mobility of the Bretonnians. I looked at the DoW pdf and Dwarfs can take a unit of cavalry. The Dwarf army book also says that a mercenary unit can be taken by Dwarfs.
So the question for those that are more experienced with fantasy is: Is this still allowed by the rules (okay it might change in 8th edition so I'll wait anyways) currently or are there different rules about Dogs that would prevent me taking a unit of heavy cavalry?

i should have charged double time directly at your gunline instead of trying to skirt it. hope for some good armour saves and reach the line to cause havoc
Was fun though =) I learned a lot during last session.

dogs of war can certainly be added as a rare choice (well for another few weeks anyways til it's all invalidated again!) and I've tried a few choices here and there for fun... Tommy regularly uses the skink rider guys in his lizards list and has had some pretty good success with them...
nothing wrong with giving it a try and seeing how it works.... just don't get the cav too far afield... without support they're asking to get picked off and isolated.... however if you can hold them back a little (and protect of course) once you anvil with say your ironbreakers, having some nice hard calvary smoke into the flank can certainly turn the tide for you...
Add in the ability to go hunting troublesome units that try and stay away from your lines / harass... and it's a perfectly good choice...
however, it does take up a slot that a gyrocopter could take for similar harassment duties (and flying, which is awesome!).... I'd suggest giving a gyro the old college try if you haven't already... like I've said, I've got most dwarf models if you'd like to make a list and try out something before you commit to any purchases....
seriously though... gyros rock... I never leave the hold without bringing one along! (depending on how 8th plays out for them, I may even buy a second one - no partials + flying into the exact position you want = awesome)

Yeah it was a good game Dave; I learned a lot as well and I like the Bretonnian army.
Regarding getting cavalry (Dogs of War) for my Dwarf army I will wait anyways to see what changes 8th edition makes to cavalry, Dwarfs and/or Dogs of War before seriously considering getting some.
I have to ponder over my list to see if I want to adjust it some more before next week. Shannon, if I decide to try out the gyro or something else in my list I don't have I'll let you know. Thanks.

I have a DoW unit that I have used with my Dwarf army; Muktar's Desert Dogs which I can bring if you want to give them a go. I can send you .pdf file with the special rules for this unit and others. Also if you want to try the Hewer I can bring it along. Played it in the last tourney and "I like it....I like it a lot" ;D. And yes I have King Grudgebearer...unpainted and partly assembled but never used due to the high pt. cost Let me know if you want to field either of these and I can bring them thursday's.

Thanks for the offers to use your models in my dwarf army, but I'm fine at this time (I'll certainly let you know if I alter my list and need to use them). With the changes to charging in 8th edition I will wait to see how games play out - the impression is that warrior types may get some charges in but also that charges and striking first will not hurt the Dwarfs' return attacks as much as before with changes to close combat.
