not sure I'd spend the points for the banner protection, as he's pretty safe as it is. I think the banner could me more useful on your midfield blocks of dudes who need to lug it across the board so need the extra protection.
you're going to take the bikes anyways (what custodes player ever runs without them?) so I think it's less of an either or and more of the want both of them. Just buying 4 bikes instead of this dread is a mistake in my opinion if you have both options available. Take both.

lol, I've been on the receiving end of many a shot to Magnus; I know how much he suffers from the lack of a secondary save. He's got a 3+/4++; the telemon matches his invul but beats him on armor. Magnus can have a spell that gives him +1 to his invul for a 3++ final; however, the Telemon has that 6+ FNP save. Yes it's a 6+ but still a better mortal wound avoidance than Magnus gets, he's also getting wounded a lot less than Magnus as he's a full point tougher albeit with 3 less wounds.
Plus, Magnus has to get a LOT closer to be effective. My opponents would love me to keep Magnus in the 36-48" range from their army.

A las pred will do more damage to the telemon than to a 3++ maggy
The bottom line though, is that this edition has really moved away from big models. Yah, these seem scary, but when a couple of lucky las shots can punk almost a quarter of your army, that's bad news. Instead of magnus or the leviathan, what if you brought 50-60 pink horros? Now its no contest as to who is harder to kill (the horrors btw)

absolutely correct... in every case where I've brought a greater daemon for example, the equivalent points in smaller dudes is always the better choice.
...but I love me some big crazy looking monsters...

Yikes,I can see the Custodes lists now. You take two of those things and the bare minimum to fill out the patrol detachment. Said dreadnoughts proceed to table the enemy army while the troops stand around looking pretty.
Toughness 8 means most stuff is wounding on 5/6 unless you use the heaviest anti-tank weapons. And the 4+ invul along with the 6+ FnP means you either need mortal wounds (psykers, massed sniper fire or C'Tan) or a LOT of anti-tank guns shooting at it.

They're limited to one per army. Again, if you can handle a leviathan, you can handle one of these.
