Welcome to the forums and community Brayden! We like to think we're a pretty welcoming place, and I'm glad that our reputation reflects that. The biggest piece of advice I can give any new player is: Take your time. The game isn't going anywhere, I've put a link to the Current Release list thread below so you can easily see what codices are out for 40k and begin there. Find an army that looks interesting to you and ask some questions about them; we've got lots of people here that can help with answering just about any question you can have about any faction that currently exists. Once you've chosen your faction, then buy the codex first and foremost. Look at the units and plan out an army, run it by a few people in person on saturdays or post it on here. 40k can be a pricey hobby, and there's nothing worse than buying a model that you find out you'll never use. Best of luck! Voodoo aka Matt kingstonwarhammer.proboards.com/thread/5337/current-40k-release-list

Hey Brayden! Welcome to the forum. You're definitely in luck. Kingston has a great warhammer scene and is very welcoming to new players.
Matt (Voodoo) as absolutely right. Finding an army you like the look and background of is really the best place to start.
I would start with the look first. Once you narrow it down to a few factions, you can read up on their lore on the 40k Wiki, and ask around here about their play style. Once you have picked out your faction, a Start Collecting! box and the codex is usually a good place to begin.
For hobby supplies, all you really need to start are some clippers, glue, a hobby knife, dice and a measuring tape. After that you can jump into primers, paints, inks, brushes, pallets, basing materials, and so on.

Welcome Brayden!
We're a pretty friendly community here for new players, and there's always someone around who can run you through your first few games at smaller point levels so you can get familiar with the mechanics.
I always say go with what you like the look of when it comes to miniatures (which is why I have WAY too many!) because you're going to be spending lots of time assembling, painting and playing with them!
start small and play what you like... the great thing about 8th edition is every army is playable, especially in our friendlier meta that isn't so much about netlists.

The above is all right on the mark - if you're coming in completely blind, come down on a saturday and talk to people - there is a pretty solid diversity of armies present regularly, if a bit short on Orks in my humble opinion, and you can spitball ideas off a right proper horde.
We've had a few people of late do exactly that, and I for one will never pass up an opportunity to talk warhammer.

As a pretty new member myself I would also recommend coming in and seeing some play. One thing that may affect you choice is a shooty vs a close combat army which could greatly swing the army you would like. Also people are more then willing to talk about rules and even more so if it involves there army. Hope to see you soon.

I have been in the past couple weekends checking it out. I decided to go with Space Marines as my first army.

good choice on the marines! lots of options, can have different chapters to test out what you'd like, and can make them look really good with some simple painting techniques...

Yes I thought it would be something good to start with and then when I learn the game and get use to everything I can branch out and try other things
