Hey folks, so I've been playing with the new options for Wolf Lords in the Space Wolves dex based on the reviews and such so far, and toying with the idea of creating a Space-Wolf version of Captain Smash
I've come up with two different trains of thought so far:
1) Captain Wolf
Wolf Lord with Jump Pack Thunder Hammer Storm Shield Armour of Russ Saga of the Hunter
12" + D6" movement since you can advance and charge, 3++ Invul, Str 8 with 4 Attacks hitting on 2s rerolling 1s. Armour of Russ allows you to make the enemy you are fighting go last, and once you get a successful charge off, your 6" reroll aura also allows nearby units to advance and charge.
2) Captain Claws
Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf 2x Wolf Claws Armour of Russ Saga of the Wolfkin
10" Movement, 4++ Invul, 6 Attacks + 3 Wolf Attacks, 2s rerolling 1s to hit and Str 5 rerolling all wounds, and still making an enemy unit fight last. After you slay 5 models your rerolls 1s aura grants +1 attack to everything nearby.
Both of these cost ~130 points, let me know what you think!

both look good, i was thinking thunder wolf lord with th/ss with saga of the hunter would be a common occurrence but those look great also

Yeah, the synergy that goes along with it will be important for sure. I have yet to figure out if I like the Wulfen Stone + Saga of the Wolfkin on Captain Claws, +2 attacks to everything within 3" is just broken good if you've got a horde of bodies like Blood Claws. Could you imagine 10 Skyclaws getting 60 attacks? 2s + reroll 1s and reroll 1s to wound with 60 freaking attacks. Even things up to T7 probably don't want to take that many armour saves lol.

I think the T-wolf with thunderhammer/stormshield is going to be a very popular build. The increased statline is pretty dang sweet.

Yeah, I think I did the math wrong, Berserk Charge is only +1 attack now, so it would be :
Base + Chainsword + Berserk Charge + The Wulfen Stone + Saga of the Wolfkin for 50 attacks.
Still, that's a LOT of attacks for a 160 point unit, and they hit on 2s rerolling 1s...

Actually, I just realized the Wolf Lord on Bike would be really nasty since Turbo Boost gives him an auto 6" advance.
Bike + Saga of the Hunter = 20" Move/Advance + Charge

yep but is it worth having to bring the codex and the index(as bike lords are not in the codex), i say cause im lazy and that would be a factor for me lol

The allure of Slamguinius is in the support he gets from Blood Angels stratagems and relics; the ability to engage on almost any target in the game between Forlorn Fury, Upon Wings of Fire, and Descent of Angels and to get in without being affected by Overwatch. Without Red Rampage and the Black Rage, the Wolf version will have fewer attacks, and without the Angel's Wing, he'll get affected by overwatch (which is very scary against Valiants, and Renegade Knights with dual Gatling Cannons), and won't be able to freely engage almost any target on the board at the top of turn one.
So, while strong, I can't imagine it being as meta-warping as our Blood Angels friend.

Pretty much echo what Typhus said...
there's a reason every marine list doesn't include a jump pack captain with a thunder hammer while EVERY competitive blood angels list does.
Angel's wing + 3D6 charge from deep strike + Death company is the gold
He's alright, don't get me wrong... he'll do some work... but slamwolf I don't think is going to do as much as thunder-buddies might...
(thunder-buddies for life!)

Yeah, I should clarify I in no way think a Smash Captain is directly comparable. I'm trying different things to try and find the wolf version, who will be unique in the wolf ways.

i think they are suppose to fill a little different role. in the yes they will be a little smashy but not as smashy. Its when they finish their legendary deed or what ever its call they will boost the rest of the army and make it better.
they will be great hiding near units of similar speed so they can either charge or the 6 inch heroic intervention puts them very flexible as counter charge units

Combat space marine characters I think are a touch under-rated. My various chaos lord builds, even when it's just a power sword and a few buffing relics/ warlord traits and mulch a lot of stuff - people see the re-roll aura and discount their ability to smash face unless they're Slamguinius.
I look forwards to seeing what Wolf Lords end up doing, even if I will cringe every time one must list their various wolfy wolf wolfness.

So today I think broke the Wolf Lord code.
Armour of Russ + Saga of the Warrior Born + Jump Pack = Wolf lord that can jump over models to heroically intervene, remove charging strike first from an opponent, and then grant strike first to himself, allowing him to punch a unit in the face that just charged, BEFORE they can strike.
Effectively, He wolfs your wolf before you can wolf.
I'm so happy about it.

That is the single situation in which Saga of the Warrior Born isn't completely underwhelming, which is already making circles around the online community.
There is much rage and nerd tears, which all things considered, is pretty damn hilarious.
People are now trying to figure out how to best get the saga finished so that it unlocks the aura before the game is at a point where it really doesn't matter.
