As some of you may know, I've pretty much hit the limit of what I can do with the current Eldar Codex. As a result I'm very nearly finished my painting and collection until 6th Edition and possibly even until 2013 and my new codex.
I'm looking to start a second 40k Army, but I've been flip flopping about what I'm looking for and what armies I've been looking at. I'm not necessarily looking for something competitive, but something cool, and fun to play.
I do have few different ideas for armies in mind, but nothing in concrete, so here's my running list.
- Tau Deepstriking Battlesuits from Tetra Scouts, Supported by Hammerheads and Devilfish, All painted like Original Gundam Wing - Blood Angels with a Stormraven and Shooty-Terminators as Blood Ravens - Tyranids converted and painted like the bugs from Starship Troopers So this is your chance to convert me to the "Dark Side", I need to get the creative juices flowing!
Note: I'd be pretty swayed by the cool factor of an army.

I like all the armies you have up there. tau gundam army would be awesome. The tetra scouts seem like they would be amazing with all those marker lights, and they are supose to be getting a new codex, but it seems to be getting pushed back everything a rumour comes out so who knows. Blood ravens would also be awesome. i love my blood angels they are awesome and so fun to play. Im not 100% sure but isnt the fluff about blood ravens that they have higher then average librarians? were the blood angels would be good for that, and well storm ravens are awesome. Nids are one of the armies that i always like the look of they remind me of the alien movies. that said if i could convert and had the skills id probably make them look more like the alien movies aliens and have some of them bursting out of space marine chests and stuff lol

If you could pull off Gundam, that would be the coolest one in my opinion... lots of dynamic posing and suits are such a cool model, basing an army off them would look pretty awesome! (that and they're tough!)
also locally there's only a few tau armies... and I think Tommy has a bunch of stuff up on the trade forum so you could actually get them cheap!

Tau would be a good choice because they are getting an update soon. Then you could get a good army and start all over after the update.

Yeah I agree Tau will be nice because you are a good player and you will figure out a way to get a competitve and nice list and like Shannon said there is not a lot of Tau ... but if you really want something different from your Eldar go Nids CC you will have to move and you will have to kill stuff not staying in your unkillable weave serpent

if a themed army isent 100% what your looking for then i would go with marines they have the flexabilty to be competitive weather it be with shooting or cc. actualy here this would be cool www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Kings-of-War/Orcs/Core-Units/Product/Orc-Warrior-Bundle-100-Figures.html get 2 boxes of these for more then 200 orks at almost a buck an ork. might take a long time to move but u could make movement trays. but seriously 200+ mins, its a chalenge to put out 200 shots a game let alone kill 200+ mins. it would be a big change from the cowerdly elves ;D

The problem with that is if I did Orks I would want to do a Kan Wall list. Not to mention I'd have to paint all the orks! I can barely get my 41 model Eldar list painted lol!
In seriousness I've been looking for a cool theme to build around for quite some time. But I want to be able to field whatever I want within the codex as opposed to themed armies like marines (All Bikers, Jump Packs, Drop Pods, etc) and have my theme come from either painting or conversions.
I started putting together a Tau list for kicks, I might even proxy it up and give it a shot if I get it done before the weekend.
I'm still really hung up on the 3 themes I listed tho. Their all so cool!

Well, I'm hung up on those 3 because of different reasons.
Tau Gundams: Easily the coolest of the lot, and the models wouldn't require too much converstion work to get the look I want, but they are also the least viable of the 3 armies. Through they are scheduled to get an update, they could potentially be even farther away then my Eldar are from it.
Blood Ravens: The most practical army for me to put together, the Blood Angel codex just got updated and fits well with the theme I want anyways. It's would also be painted candy red. (mmmm... candy!). But it's also the least interesting of the lot.
Tyranids: The conversions would be fun to do and would look really cool if I could do it the way I envision them. (I have what I think is a BRILLIANT warrior conversion in my head), the problem is this would be would be the slowest army to get onto the table, and would require painting the most models.
So there's where I'm stuck lol.

lol... if you're looking for competitive, you might as well lump nids in there too Ray... they're definitely regarded along with SOB as the mis-handled armies of 5th... and will be even LONGER for an update than either Eldar or Tau... and they'll be easily the most expensive force to put together (the marines being the cheapest)... but still easily they're my favourite army, if only for the theme and opportunities for conversion....

What do you have for you Eldar other than your mechdar list? If you're keen on playing them again once the new book comes out, you could always try to pick up some different units/play a weird variety of lists, which will give you a solid collection for the next book. Playing really unoptimized lists and making the best of them can be a ton of fun due to the inherent challenge of starting behind the 8-ball.
Otherwise, I'd go for the Marines....they're the least likely to leave you with a bunch of models that aren't going to be any good when the book/edition switches over. Tau are a little ways off yes, but I can see GW really tearing apart that codex and having the current line of models not be hugely useful when the switch-over happens.
