Well, remember, those sargents are also fragile, and I need them to maintain my leadership advantage via summary execution (not that stubborn ld10 isn't good enough already), and I want them swinging as much as possible with those power axes. I also found that while playing against Chaos where characters HAVE to issue challenges, in the prolonged combats the blob is prone to leads to the sarges all getting challenged out.

So, after the tournament I learned a couple things And so I present, the re-tooled list: Rune Priest - Warlord, Chooser, Jaws, LL (In blob, will typically swap for Divination rolls.) Vendetta - 3x TL Lascannon 2x Leman Russ - Demolisher Cannon, Heavy Flamer didn't you tell me at the tournament that people would beat you up in the parking lot for that? lol...

Right, but if they can't be challenged when combat starts, at pile in time they should be able to get their swings in. That's the great thing about the I-1 pile in from having all power axes no? Keep them 3 inches from your front line troops or so, so that they're not in combat when it starts, can't be challenged, can't be hit. Then when I-1 turn comes, they pile in, get their attacks and hopefully get enough AP2 swings to cleave apart any of the enemy still standing.

didn't you tell me at the tournament that people would beat you up in the parking lot for that? lol... No, that was if I swapped the Russes for a second vendetta and a Manticore. Back onto topic, I agree, good positioning would prevent the need for double characters to decline/avoid challenges, but in practice, (especially with a blob) people are going to come at it from unorthodox angles, as meeting it head on is often a death sentence. On top of this, what if they shoot away my front row of guys, and then assault directly into my precious nugget of sarges/characters? And then once I'm piled in and engaged, what happens if they challenge in round 2? The Blob is prone to sticking around in combat for multiple turns quite easily. I get a ton of flexibility from having 2 chars, and it makes my warlord far harder to kill, making that bonus point far tougher to earn. Which is another reason for doing it that way.
