Has anyone here played with the new High Elf book yet? Picked it up last week but haven't had a chance to try anything out so was wondering if someone had some advice about the new book as I make my 1250 and 2500 lists for this Thursday! There really aren't any bad choices in the new book and there are several viable options available such as infantry heavy, cavalry heavy, a shooty list or a balanced approach. The silver helms make a good alternate core choice so that you aren't stuck with the standard bunch of archers/seaguard. I would certainly recommend high magic as it provides an excellent boost and all the spells are useful. Lastly, bring something to proxy a phoenix if you can (i.e. a dragon) as you can always use reinforcement points to buy one. Also, BOWD on a large block of sword masters or white lions seems almost like a no brainer IMHO.

Do you see large units of swordmasters as viable this edition? I know WLs took a bit of a hit but do you still see hordes of them working?

I'm hoping that large units of swordmasters will work because I love using them I was thinking that a Phoenix would be fun to try out but I think they have quite different sized bases. Now that all 1 attack units get to fight in two ranks, and spears give extra rank, and HE gets a FURTHER rank, does a large block of spearmen/seaguard 30 strong seem like a good choice?

The new martial prowess rule, lower cost and 6+ WS of SMs make them even better than ever before. Toss a wizard into the unit and the WS can easily be increased, thus helping offset what was the biggest problem with the unit previously - that they died horribly before ever seeing combat. With 2 x S5 attacks each and WS6, they are fantastic for chewing up anything that is T3 and quite good against T4 troops. The spears/LSG in larger blocks are viable but with only S3, they lack the punch to actually inflict much in the way of active combat resolution. A good combo I could see is a couple chariots with a block of ~25 spears/LSG to deny ranks hitting a unit with the possible addition of a frost phoenix to reduce the opponents strength. Alternatively, a wizard that gets off a couple spells could also give them a 5+ ward save.

One phoenix seeming better than the other or very list specific. I get that high magic seems to be a good swiss army knife lore but man light and shadow seem like great options as well.

High Magic looks pretty fantastic, but I'm still high on Shadow for High Elves....Mindrazor is so fantastic on Spears, especially now that they're cheaper, and the character swap when you cast was huge for me a number of times.

Is it true that Maiden Guard don't have a musician option and if so WTF?

I don't have my book on me but I haven't looked much at the Maiden Guard yet so couldn't give you an answer until I get home. That would seem VERY strange to me to not offer a musician option to such an elite unit (Rare choice!)

Just was hearing it on another site. If true, pretty limiting for a missile unit not being able to rapid reform.

Apparently you are correct! They can only take champ upgrade that can take 25pts of magic weapons. Unlike the Shadow Warriors champ the Sisters one gets an additional BS (BS6) in lieu of an extra attack. They do have quick to fire so I guess that mitigates the lack of musician a little...

Maiden guard do indeed lack a musician upgrade but I believe it is actually not an oversight but an intentional design issue to provide some limitation on them. This at least will force more tactical use of the unit and also give some chance for a fast cav or scout unit to come in on their flank and engage them. Since they have martial prowess and can fire in 3 ranks, the inability to do a swift reform is only a minor hindrance - just field them 4 x 3 and they can easily wheel 90 degrees and still shoot.

If delibrate (it is GW). Seems an interesting change in their design approach.
