It was always one of the 40k rules that never made sense in my brain... and was always difficult to explain "why" this was the case to new players... so I for one am glad they're changing it...
it makes infantry more useful than just objective camping too !

Going back to the large creature/ tank discussion, what do most AoS players use as a wound counter? I was mildly annoyed at having to keep track of my Stormsurge's 8 wounds. Now that an average dread has that many, and larger vehicles can have over 20(!), I feel like standard D6s on the bases aren't going to cut it anymore.

Scott has a really cool system where he basically builds little squares on his monster bases for dice to sit in....
GW recently released "wound counter" dice for AOS...
If the wound system is similar, most times a D12 works just great as it covers off almost all monsters.

I will just make damage grids that fit in standard card sleeves to handle this.

Who else is excited for guardian weapon platforms becoming varied and really good? Also fire dragons will be seeing quite a bit of play I think. Unit of 6 is probably going to be one of the few things that will one shot heavy units (almost said tanks). Multi kit war walkers might also turn into a viable option (two providing cover and protection, the third rocking double bright Lance antitank power).

I believe they have said several times now that the days of one shotting tanks are done.

Yes, with a single weapon are gone, but the days of 6 shots taking out a tank are not.

I think they gave an example of a melta sternguard squad nuking a tank in one go.

I think they gave an example of a melta sternguard squad nuking a tank in one go. If it is a squad kitted out with melta as a tank hunting squad I May cool with this. I just don't want it to be one guy with a melta gun or bomb wrecking armor, I want it to be a group of dedicated soldiers all with melta doing the work.

It's all speculation at this point, but we can only go off what we've been told...
if a landraider has "dozens" of wounds at high toughness (if a dread is T7 I can only imagine the big tanks are higher) then said melta is wounding on a 3+ at best (T7 or below due to new damage chart) but more likely a 4+ or even 5+ is possible - who knows as the biggest tank we've seen is a morkanaut (which wasn't exactly stellar throughout 7th!)
we haven't seen melta but I'd assume we're talking a D6 wounds much like a lascannon, probably with some good armor pen values.
but lets go with the biggest, baddest weapon we've seen - the lascannon.... and the morkanaut - which is the only large model we have the rules of beyond a dreadnought.
Lascannon fielded by a marine hits on a 3+, wounds on a 3+ with -3 rend and D6 wounds - mork has a 3+ save and 18 wounds
12 devs (so three full units if the same kit as now) all shooting lascannons should hit eight times, and wound 6 times. The mork should save one of those on average leaving around 5D6 damage. The average on 5D6 is 17.5, so a pretty decent chance to kill one.... assuming -> no cover / KFF save anymore, and you hit and wound the high side of average that I just gave... one less hit/wound and it's not very likely to die at all.
and that's a freaking morkanaut with three units worth of heavy weapons shooting at it.
how hard is it to kill a morkanaut right now? technically ONE of those lascannons could do it by rolling a 6 on the vehicle damage chart..... three full units? ummmm yeah, it's evaporated easily.
Vehicles we've seen already require more heavy weapon firepower to kill... so I think we can safely say that one shotting tanks is POSSIBLE, and in some cases PROBABLE... but far less likely than before.
(10 combi-meltas SHOULD kill a tank - so I'm totally okay with this! I'd hate to be back in 5th with the unkillable rhinos)
