Maybe a nice broken vanguard detachment of 3 riptides and a plasma commander. With tau brigade.

That's hideous... each riptide can now mount the nose gun from the Fire Raptor with two bonus shots and are now far more survivable.
And GW wonders why people don't like Tau; lol.

Not to "defend" the riptide here. But it's EITHER more shots OR more survivable, unless you spend 1CP every turn. and you take a mortal wound every turn to do so. Even then you have to go first or it's vulnerable on the first turn. If you spend 1CP on a ~270-300 point model every turn, it probably deserves to be that nasty.

you can do different strategems in the same phase... one of them lets you overcharge for two effects... so not either or actually.
I think GW has always had a hard time balancing the suits for several editions now... they either go too far in one direction or the other, which caused the riptide wing problem of 7th, the mess that the stormsurge was upon release, and the over-compensation of the index book which soared the cost and nerfed the suit. Meanwhile stealth suits, although a super cool concept, have always been pretty terrible to at best "meh but everything else is way better!"
I really hope they get it right this time. I like to see tau on the table as it's a cool different aesthetic.... however GW has an unfortunate history of allowing some pretty major power creep happen, and I hope they show restraint and balance, as they've been doing pretty darn good this edition.
...it's like I'm just worried they'll go back to the major, major rules mistakes of 7th and create an unbalanced mess all over again.
I want EACH army released to be "wow this is viable, balanced, cool, and I can make some different great lists"... that's how the community stays varied and fun.

At 270 pts per riptide and 10 pts per shield drone on top, they are deadly but is a riptide+3 shield drones as good as 1x russ with heavy bolter/punisher and 1x russ with heavy bolter plasma cannon both double shooting..
Both being 300 pts ish

In line with what Shannon said, I'm really hoping that Tau will push synergy amongst different unit types. There's so many cool parts to that army, so many options to be mobile and creative, but too often it's just been a no-brainer to throw out a castled gunline made out of 2 or 3 unit types.

And it looks like the XV8 commanders won't be a seperate unit slot, but a base model that can be upgraded to "Enforcer" armour (the armour that new commander model wears)
I could see taking a vanguard of farsight suits with flamers potentially. Drop them down against something weak in melee, charge it, and then fall back to within 6" and shoot. You could even fall back over the unit to get to something tastier. Other than that, 6" is really not a place tau want to be...

Well we all know why this change was made... as Lukas pointed out many, many times to me, there was zero incentive to take anything else when you could just do more by spamming more commanders... not that commander spam I think was taking over the GT's or anything but it seemed as though that was thought of in the index as the go-to for any optimized list.
But I'd rather game design that incentivizes other choices rather than giving hard caps on one stellar unit.
Guess you can still take three if you max detachments at 2k

oh man... I kinda want to build this now... what sept is tentacle pink colour?

- So my take away is that they were super lazy in balancing commanders, surely you could have found some balance based in point cost increase or other methods like 3+ BS its still an improvement on the 4+ every one else has, GW this was lazy.
- Farsight enclaves was ALMOST worth taking 6" is not a good place to be for any tau. I think they easily could have made it 9" as it would still block the alpha strike off manta drops at 9.1" away but gives a little bit of breathing room for the tau 9" feels better without breaking. (I think 12" would have been fair as so many other armies have a if MORE than 12", why not if LESS than 12")
- The age of BUFFmander(s) is back!!! command and control node is going to be the only reason to start a commander on the table, pop that lovely re-roll everything to hit in 6" and then boost a riptide or bigger suit to re-roll wounds. Might be the alpha strike tau need.
- Still no Crisis changes?? I would have thought that Farsight would be the teaser to release the minor changes that Crisis need to see more play but it looks like the crisis suit will stay about 15% overcosted out of the game. At least ghost keels and riptides are back in it; maybe the surge too if there are some good strats.
Looking forward to the stealth world and Kroot/Vespid worlds teaser. Im hoping to see a reason to get Kroot on the table after that looks like an insanely good buff to fire warriors.

Nice trade mark.
I’m starting to see a awesome Tau list with multiple home worlds. And 3 buffmanders, built for close combat.
