what's highlander you ask?
Well, there can be only ONE! That's right, everything is a 0-1 choice!
So if you bring a hive tyrant for example, there's only one allowed in your army, no matter how many detachments you bring. This goes for every other choice in your detachment of course. The only exception there is if you have brought one of EVERY troop you have access to in your army (ie: for necrons if you've brought one warrior and one immortal unit) you are permitted to duplicate a single troop unit ONCE. If you are playing an army with only ONE troop choice available, you may bring up to THREE of these troop units to make a battalion, so you can duplicate twice - but only if your ENTIRE army only has a single troop choice. For example if you have a detachment of blood angels and a detachment of custodes in the same army, you could NOT bring three choices of custodes troops (as you have blood angels troops to choose from as well!) If you are playing an army which limits your troop choices within your faction (ie: daemonic allegiance, Dark Eldar Kabal/Wych/Coven) the above applies as well.
For this specific format, if you have a rule that allows you to take multiple vehicle / monster units in a single unit that act independently once played (ie: carnifex) you are still only allowed a single choice (ie: no three carnifex units as they're independent once placed so would actually be three independent units once the game starts!)
Lords of war are permitted, however fall under a 0-1 limit ( there can be only one!)
Vehicles/monsters/units which are essentially the same unit (ie: landraider crusader, landraider, forge world landraider variant, etc.) where the only real difference is a gun all count as being the same unit for these restrictions - so only one! Yes that means you cannot bring multiple baneblade variants, or forgeworld knight variants (although the armiger and imperial knight would be considered different chasis as they're so widely different units). Likewise a special character and a regular version would still count as the same unit (ie: Tigerius and a space marine librarian)
This also goes for detachments - so regardless of which type of detachment you choose it can only be used ONCE when building your army. (ie: no double spearheads, triple vanguards etc.)
This is a challenge for list building, and results in widely different lists than we normally see at tournaments, because frankly you run out of "optimal" choices and have to start bringing units you may not necessarily bring normally!
