Alright, thank you.
I have PDFs of various codexes. Say I was to come down to the nexus with a small force (On a booked time of course), would some print outs and my battlescribe lists be enough in that case to get a game? Would I need to bring anything other than that?

Also, odd question, but if I was able to get a small force together (Eventually), is anyone willing to do a small 500 point game so I can learn the rules? Or would it be best for me to build up a bigger force first (Say 1000 points)?
I tend to learn better by doing rather than just reading, hahaha.

Print outs and battle scribe is enough. Especially when first starting out.
And I'm sure there would be people who would play any points level to get you use to the game. May be a little harder now with he booking and such but that's how I got into 40k

Thanks
I've actually made a small 500 point combat patrol list. Now it's just a matter of actually buying models.

Probably in a month I’m going to try and start up a escalation crusade campaign starting at 500pts. There will be lots of games at 500 pts. For a little while anyways. I’ll post more in the campaign forum this week.

I don't think I could do that, just due to limited funds and not being able to buy enough new models in time, hahaha. Still, I'll look forward to learning 9th. I had been a bit of a downer earlier, but that was just me being depressed. I have a vet appointment coming up for my cat. After that, hopefully I can get some models and paint them up.

Lots of Escalation Leagues only add 250pts a month.

So, I've been looking over the free basic rules, as well as battlescribe. How do I tell what is a blast weapon or not? Is it only in the core book for now, or is this a case of me having skimmed over something in the basics by mistake? I don't think what I plan to build/buy would have any (at least, not at the moment), but I also recall hearing of some other changes in the core book that I don't know whether or not they are in the basic rules that are free.
I have a vet appointment next week. After that, I hope to potentially get some things to build a 500 point force to try out. After that, it's a matter of slowly building up the full army based on what I like, while still being rules legal.
I just hope the codex (when it comes out anyway) won't change things so drastically as to make my choices of weapons or units stupid.

The free core rules are pretty lacking. No list of blast weapons or terrain rules. Kind of puts a lie to the whole "the rules are free this time guys!", if they aren't actually sufficient to find a pick of game.
Still need to grab the core book myself. Money is a bit tight at the moment. Not even considering grabbing the chapter approved. Once a year is enough for me on that one. Battlescribe points will have to do.
I'm sure I'll get a game of 9th in eventually

Conveniently, Uncle Atom has a great answer for you. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nn_TBOKe-uIDon't ever worry about units/codex/meta/edition/etc changing. No matter what for casual play your unit choices will work on the battlefield and you'll have fun. They might not be "optimal", or "competitive" sometimes, but that might matter once or twice a year when you head out to the big tournament and you run into Hardcore Harry, the mythical 40k gamer who buys and sells a new army every six weeks when a new OP codex/faq/etc comes out. The reality is "Hardcore Harry" doesn't really exist. Having units and an army you like and enjoy is far more important. Coolness to YOU is what matters, after all, you won't enjoy assembling, painting, list-crafting or playing if you don't like the models you have

I'm sure I'll get a game of 9th in eventually Chapter approved isn't strictly necessary at all... has a bunch of additional missions for different point levels, and the points are all updated in battlescribe. If you play a lot of games, then it's nice to have the mission variety, however it's not necessary to play the game at all. The basic rules can be used if you just add the blast weapon list which Chris linked above, and some basics for the terrain rules. Over 5" high is obscuring unless you're in it light cover gives +1 armor save to non-vehicles/monsters in it Dense cover gives a -1 to hit penalty for shooting through it there, that's the vast majority of all your rules you'll need to play a game!

Thanks for links/info. I was able to find the missing rules with a little bit of digging; hurrah for the internet! Just a little bit of grumbling on my part for having to jump through hoops to dodge the $130 buy-in GW suggests for 9th. My fault for being too poor for the hobby I chose haha.
I would like to echo Frosty's sentiment about not worrying about anything other than what you think is cool though. I've been building my army at a snails pace, and mostly just playing what I have. Still been having a lot of fun. Outside of instances of extremely lopsided codexes, (which will always be in flux) I've never felt like I was too handicapped for having a less than optimal set of units.

I have my first 500 points picked out, and let me tell you, I did it entirely based on what I like, with it probably not being very viable. I also figure I'll mostly avoid the really serious tournaments, and if I do attend one, only the more causal ones. I hear that the secret Santa and great crusade are both supposed to be good in that regard. I'll avoid club champs like the plague though. I don't do well under lots of pressure, so I fear I'd just be too stressed there anyway. Oh, I'd also like to apologize for the large amount of posts lately. I don't mean to spam.

I've dusted off my what was left of my nid collection because 9th is looking pretty awesome. Wondering if I should pick up the 8th ed nid dex or wait for points adjustments?
