Well that sucks... the Orbital Ion Beam is basically a larger, harder hitting, cheaper version of the Thousand Sons Coruscating Beam strat.
Orbital Ion Beam: 2CP, 2 points 12" apart, 2-5 = D3 Mortals & 6+ is 3 Mortals, +1 if passes over a building Coruscating Beam: 3CP, 2 points 9" apart, 4+ = D3 mortals, subrtract 1 if passes over a character, add 1 if the unit has 11 or more models

Woah is there no downside to targeting characters with that strat?

Woah is there no downside to targeting characters with that strat? None whatsoever. Also, unlike the Thousand Sons strat, you don't need your warlord on the table to do it either.

I think its funny that breachers are going to be -4 AP on turn one, with Mont'ka and 1cp for coordinated engagement. With the devil fish scout move, then move, disembark, move + advance you can make almost anything be in 8" of them. Look out power armor!

Does the thousand sons version trigger in the same way? I read to "use this in your command phase, and place markers, at the start of your next command phase, use the ability" and wondered how likely my opponent isn't just going to shuffle out of the way of 12" x 1mm line.

I was wondering the same thing. the effect doesn't happen until the start of your next command phase, so the target has a full turn to get out the way. kinda like the orbital bombardment thing. so like really it's mostly to try amd control where your opponents can safely go I guess, screw around their movemt plans or something.

The Thousand Sons version is substantially better - you place a single marker when you use it, and then later when it triggers you place the second marker. This lets the Thousand Sons player react to enemy movements, to some degree. That said, none of these orbital strike stratagems are really good. I think its funny that breachers are going to be -4 AP on turn one, with Mont'ka and 1cp for coordinated engagement. With the devil fish scout move, then move, disembark, move + advance you can make almost anything be in 8" of them. Look out power armor! ...Yeah. "Funny".

Yah, Ion Beam is flat out terrible, just like all "orbital bombardment". The fact that the enemy has a full turn to get out of the way makes it borderline insulting as a strat haha.
Yup, breachers in fishies are gonna be pretty cool. But they have to be. Without options to be good up close and personal, T'au are gonna be stuck castling up in the back corner again. Nobody, including T'au players, wants that.

Then on a given or random turn it goes off. Sure it may hit nothing...but its not guaranteed to hit nothing like the current versions

While I am excited that the codex seems to push the things I want to play (troops, transports, smaller suits, tanks), I really hope I don't end up in a scenario where I look like a cheese lord because suddenly all my favourite units are OP.
I did not envy the Iron Hands players who spent about a minute and a half super happy that their dread lists were playable, before realizing no one wanted to play with them.
On the plus side, at least I'm bad at the game?

I like his info, but man I hate the cadence of his voice.
I'll still watch it though. Thanks!
