The long-read: www.goonhammer.com/codex-tau-empire-9th-edition-the-goonhammer-reviewI'm about halfway through. But I gotta go ahead and say I TOLD YOU SO with this quote: EDIT: Lol, finally made it to the list section of the article. You know the hype train is wrong when they present 3 lists and only 1 of them takes a single hammerhead and another takes just Longstrike. Hope nope of y'all rushed out to buy 3/4 hammerheads. That's how good the heavy slot is, that the Hammerhead is the "easiest to cut" option they all debating pulling from their lists. Wow.

I don't think any of the lists were meant to be as nasty as possible, but no, I don't think railguns will be the game breaking weapon the internet seems to be losing its mind over. It was nice to see some guys having fun adding the units they like to a list that can still play the game.
They seem pretty positive about the book, and other reviews seem to say the same. Tau definitely have some powerful shooting and (finally) some good movement tricks, but there are also baked in weaknesses that a player will have to avoid.
I'm excited to read that it seems to have good internal balance. I hope to avoid simultaneously getting my ass handed to me for playing with the models I own, and having it suggested that I avoid local tournaments because I play the army that does that unfun drone spam thing.

I agree. I think I'll actually play tau again. It's been a while.

Tabletop tactics Battle report here. If you want to see the full power of the hammerhead, take a gander. youtu.be/zOdfW9Ar-iU First example at 45:35 is underwhelming, but the second time it comes up at 1:06:45, ooooohhh man, hold on to your butts. It kills stuff.

I own a few random tau kits. If I ever make a tau army though, I don't even want a hammerhead. I have an idea in mind for what a potential tau army would look like for me, and it has none of those hammerheads at all. So, nobody can accuse me of meta chasing, hahaha. Well, hopefully they won't anyway.

Wow. yeah with riptides being moved to heavy means hammerheads have to compete with them, broadsides and skyrays. and the whole broadsides getting core and the riptides gun being pretty good makes it a highly contested slot now. but does ease up the elite slot a bit

It's funny because last edition I would have loved to see riptides get moved to heavy. It seemed like everything went into the elite slot. Now it's suddenly feeling pretty tight in the heavy department. Not a real complaint though. Even before this I was playing my hammerheads OR my riptides, never both (but always broadsides).

Well, it's comforting to know that GW still can't balance Tau properly.

Well, it's comforting to know that GW still can't balance Tau properly. Because making a faction that only plays in 1-2 parts of a multi phase game has been a bad idea forever. They wrote Tau into a fluff corner thar they can't seem to crunch their way out of Literally nothing is stopping them from introducing a psychic auxiliary race, or making kroot actual good at melee, or introducing a fancy new type of suit that actually does something other than die in the assault step, or have abilities that mess w leadership. Nope just oppressive shooting and sometimes maneuverability....for 20 years now.

I have a really hard time watching their batreps... they're a little too far in the "look how wacky we are" camp... grates on my nerves a bit.
I did move to your second time stamp though to see what you were talking about, which was pretty funny.
