that counterfire strat is hilarious.... I counter your railgun... well I counter YOUR railgun...
Somehow I'm more scared of the railgun than the 12 damage stormsurge cannon. At least you get an invul save and it doesn't tag mortals on!

Yeah, the counterfire defence is just another "kill this model with mortals". Really though, 1CP to drop any incoming damage to 1 is a bit ridiculous considering the 1/3CP costs of rotate Ion shields currently, which won't even save knights from a railgun shot...
Hopefully Knights of both flavours get some strats similar to this that'll allow them an equal chance to shrug off heavy firepower.

It also needs a whole turn to set up, so rerolling turn 2 at the earliest. The Tau's opponent will have tonnes of warning to get out of the way. Counterfire strat will be hilarious in tau mirror matches 😂 Start of your movement phase until your next shooting phase. Your next shooting phase is the one immediately after your movement phase....unless they meant the shooting phase of the following battle round.

The big thing is that it only affects 1 attack Each to hit roll for a weapon's ROF is 1 attack....so while this hard counters something like the Rail Gun which only gets one attack, its less effective against anything throwing multiple dice....or anything like fire dragons/eradicators/etc Its like much worse tanhausers bones but for 1 CP every time you want to use it. With that said if you time it right, it will be absolutely clutch.

That is better. There is definitely more to that action that we're not seeing yet though. Probably a second part about how to raise the anchors, or what you can/ can not do while they are down. It still allows counterplay though. The SS can not move before getting the rerolls. On most standard deployments, it will be out of range for the big boom from its deployment 1st turn. If the opponent goes first, you can choose to go out of its line of sight. If Tau goes first, it will either need to move, or put down anchors in deployment zone and kinda be stuck.

Does seem to read that way. As a grey knights player who loved dradknights before they were cool... I gotta wonder if this does not stop or hinder the 5 dreadknight grey knights.

Overall, they seem to be previewing low quantity, high quality shots (which I will remind everyone, has traditionally not been a recipe for success in 40k)

Assuming it's got the titanic keyword as well, any terrain more than 5" tall will allow smaller units to hide from it easily. It will kill big stuff like crazy, but against MSU armies that can play cagey it'll have a very tough time.

Counterfire strat will be hilarious in tau mirror matches 😂 Hammer heads still end up being like decent in this since it would be damage 1 + 3 mortals but ya counter fire is a pretty troll feeling strat. I do think that anchors are going to be pretty meh, since I can't see them getting down before turn 3. Turn one run up and gain position, start of turn 2 drop anchor, turn 3 get to use it. If a storm surge is still alive at that point you already have a runway victory i'd assume. edit: need to re-read or wait to get ruling on what the NEXT shooting phase means, is it the one right after movement or next turn shooting phase.

Yup, that's a big gun. As I recall, in the past, it hasn't been the lack of damage that has stopped the stormsurge from seeing plays as much as it was the fact that it wasn't a battlesuit. So like hammerheads, they aren't that hard to remove without access to saviour protocols.
Obviously it's really going to hurt now if these guns manage to connect, but I've played with low volume/high potency weapons enough to remember that they often end up being a huge letdown.
Counterfire defense strat is cool, but it sounds like it's still locked to a support system, which unlocks the ability to use the strat in addition to whatever it will do normally. So there's a point, CP, and opportunity cost to equip a model with one. Will it end up being the better choice? Who knows? I imagine it's still going to be competing for a slot with a 4++ though.
Alternatively, CDS is going to be a keyword, so we will have to see who gets it.
Either way, I doubt I'll end up with a stormsurge any time soon. So I'll have to ask the internet if it ends up being OP or not.

well your next shooting phase would be the one after the action. Which is done in movement phase... so same turn

I'll remind folks that the pulse blast cannon used to be D, which would also one shot anything in the game. People still mostly took the SS for stomps in 7th.

Ah yes, so it is. So it may just have the 4++ (or riptide's 5++ version) all the time. I still think this means the hammerheads wont be able to use the strat. They don't currently have the ability to take the wargear version.
