I'm happy with all the units getting new points for the new edition. I'm excited to see what happens to destruction as i'm splitting a Dominion box and getting some short legged orcs.

So, I've been gone for a bit. Is the local consensus that the new edition is something to look forward too?
I'm asking as I wish to know if I should focus on my unbuilt AoS stuff, or start working on my unbuilt 40K stuff, hahaha.

Do what makes YOU happy, man. I guarantee you will be able to find games in either system. Just not while we're in lockdown, heh.

Well this tells us what we already know and answers none of our questions. The 400+ point model is good. They think stormfiends are super good, yea thats why they have the highest price hike I've seen in the edition. Brace for 120 clanrats as the floor for lists with 160 being the expectation since even gw thinks that's what we should be doing. 520 points for 160 rats is low key scary. Not sure what else you take in your army in the first place since a fair amount of what we used to spend our points on are no longer worth their points.

I'm really hoping for a new battletome. The current one was a mess when it was new and while we have stayed relevant competitively it's only a bigger mess now than it was before. If they want monsters to be the in new thing they need to fix how hellpit abominations work anyway since I doubt only dieing normally 25% of the time was the intention.

I'm definitely hoping skaven is one of the first battletomes.
I hear you on the monster thing. Beasts have a bunch, but they are all pretty terrible. Everything brackets into irrelevance so quickly and a 5+ save doesn't help. That's kind of my issue with the monster change for this edition. There were a few powerful monsters in the game, and they're about to get SUPER scary, but most were mediocre to crap and now they're maybe ok. As these things go, the units that didn't need the buff will get exponentially more benefit than those that did

No the problem with the hell pit is that the thing is hard to put down and keep down. When it loses its last wound you roll a d6: 1-2 nothing, 3-4 it explodes for d3 mortals and 5-6 it gets back up with d6 wounds left. Couple that with the molder command ability (and artifact) to bring back any molder Beast that dies on a 4+ and actually getting any monster slaying points just became one of the games more frustrating coin flips. The beast itself is pretty garbage but I doubt gw wants that on the table given the seasons rules.

Well I do like a good deal so picked up dominion... I'm pretty impressed... a crapton of sprues, and the big hardcover book is really nicely done. Even got some freebees to go with it (a squig key chain, which of course I'm using).
Also grabbed the new general's handbook, opened it up, and was instantly really mad at Chapter approved. The general's handbook is VERY nicely done. WAY nicer than the 40k version. Lays flat, even has TABS for relevant sections, including all the revamped endless spells.
Nice job GW... I was expecting to be disappointed. I was not.
Also with the new announcements of battletomes and some pretty sick new models for stormcast and Kruelboyz, I'm not disappointed with essentially picking up two new armies either (as there's over 1,000 points of each army in dominion!)
...now to just find better heads for the stormcast, as I truly hate their helmets.

Ignoring the points, how essential would you describe the GHB for an initial buy? I always liked the CA books as a way to add missions after the core book had gotten stale, but I'm not a huge fan of the "day one dlc" method GW has adopted.
$80 is a lot to spend on rules. $130 is hard for me to swallow. I think I need more wargaming friends to normalize this sort of spending. Or maybe I could get my wife into drugs? Then I wouldn't feel so guilty about how much money I blow.

If you care about having paper rules, GW's release pattern essentially requires a copy of the most recent GHB to play the game as designed. Without it you're missing pretty necessary stuff omitted from the core book. Not a fan personally, these days I usually just borrow my good friend Vyacheslav's copy to play.
You could play learning games without the GHB but if you intend to stick with the hobby you'll need those rules, one way or another.

Fair enough. Basically what I had assumed. This is probably GW trying to get back at people like me who basically acquired their entire army from ebay and other second hand sources. I do try to buy my rules locally though. Need to support the stores where I play, but damn the pool of what I'm willing to pay full retail price for sure is drying up.
I think I'd like to meet your russian friend.
