Need to support the stores where I play, but damn the pool of what I'm willing to pay full retail price for sure is drying up.
Feel this big time. I buy all my stuff through Nexus (and I do buy a fair amount) but I am pretty resentful of the rules churn demanding you buy these rapidly-obsolete $60 hardcovers constantly.

Well it's not as bad for some factions as others. With skaven it was one book at the beginning of 2.0 and them the ghb from there. Even our broken realms rules were super optional. We have essentially been the same since. Lizardmen is similar. The only thing in broken realms was kroak and his warscroll is in his box. The ghb is a bit of a gun to your head type deal unfortunately. Especially this year since the missions are so different

I completely passed on all the broken realms stuff. Didn't even have the hardback rulebook for 2.0, just the general's handbook for the games I had.
If it helps here's a list of the contents of the GHB:
1. realm of beasts 2. war in thondia 3. pitched battles rules, realm rules, grand strategies, core battalions, battle tactics, scoring sheet 4. 12 battle plans 5. endless spells update 6. 40 pages of the core rules for the game
did I mention it's wire spiral bound with tabs? so nice
I think the GHB was thankfully well worth the purchase. And I didn't want to buy anything for this edition and I ended up getting dominion and the GHB day one!

Hmm, well maybe I'll grab the GHB and just skip the core rules for now. The important bits are free anyway. Might find a deal if someone is looking to unload one from a dominion box.
The GHB does look nice, but I don't think there's a good reason why all that content couldn't be included in the core book. I felt the same when they released a CA alongside the core book for 9th. In that case I skipped the CA, and definitely felt like I made the right choice. Though I suppose if I got what I wanted, GW would probably just charge $130 for the core rules. This is likely their way of applying their price bump without causing too much of a fuss.
Yeah, I know I sound cheap, but none of this stuff accounts for an insignificant portion of my entertainment budget.

my guess would be that the GHB, in order to make it have more value each year, will include different realms as it's base. It's like a campaign book and a mission book all in one is my thought. I have no idea if all the rules from the core book are in GHB - haven't read them both yet, but there's 40 pages of core rules, so it seems as though quite a bit of them are at least! once I dig into them more, I can let you know what's the same and what's different... although I'm sure a google search will reveal way smarter people than me looking at the same thing I bet! according to this: www.belloflostsouls.net/2021/06/age-of-sigmar-generals-handbook-2021-overview.htmlall the core rules are there at least

I definitely get the idea of the GHB. I am completely in favour of them releasing one each year... after the first year where I already feel compelled to drop $80+tax to buy in to the new edition. This is especially true if a lot of the pages in the GHB are reprints from a book released at the same time. I'd actually be in favour of a big core book with all the rules+fluff and a year one, compact GHB with only the crunch at a cheaper price. Then people could choose one or the other, or even just grab both if "shut up and take my money" is how they approach the hobby.
Here's hoping all the core rules are there though. Even if I did end up with both books, it would be nice to be able to just bring one on game day.
I think grabbing the handbook is going to be the way I go in this case. Even if there are missing rules, they are easily found elsewhere. 2+ Tough can catch me up on any lore advancements.

Personally I'd rather GW just had a living rules set that didn't require physical books at all except as boutique items. Playing Infinity has really showcased to me how GW's book spam is really just a totally unnecessary cash grab and that distributing living rules via expensive glossy paper is incredible inefficient and archaic. But GW likes money too much so the only way that happens is with a subscription fee which I am equally unwilling to pay At least we have the full core rules for free, happy about that.

probably because I'm old I have a different perspective. I really like having a nice glossy physical book. I use the app and all, but I'd hate to read a codex on a phone or something... I really like enjoying a book for an army in a physical form.
Again though...lol... old

I absolutely agree with you there. I even read all the lore. But for me, it's not about preference, it's about price.

Grabbed the general's handbook, and you were not wrong. I am really digging this layout for a rule book. Everything you need is there, and it's all super easy to find and reference. This is going to be so much easier to deal with on game day than lugging around a giant core book.
I can't actually compare, but it looks like all of the core rules and army building stuff is in here. It is missing the crusade (path to glory?) stuff though. Not really surprised there, and I think I can live with that. The campaigns always sound cool, but in practice, I really only get to play random pick up games.
Would definitely recommend this book.

Huh do they actually reprint the core rules in the GHB? That's wild I've never looked.
My Dominion core book is 2/3rds lore and art lol... maybe even 3/4s since the rules part is spaced with studio army galleries.

I also picked up the GHB. If you don't want the awesome art and fluff the GHB is all you need. This little book is going to be so much easier to cart around than the massive core book.

This year has the best ghb or equivalent I've ever seen. Full core rules printed in the back, reference tabs for the different sections. It's great! Zero need for the core rulebook with thus unless you want the art

yup, the GHB is essentially "the rules and missions to play AOS"... the core rulebook is pretty optional if you are looking for just the mechanics to play.
but you know... it's a really pretty book too....
