A busy week of what felt like not much painting. I did manage to get an armiger warglaive on the bench and colour blocked though. Hope to be done this coming week. Trying out some new products for water effects so that may impact the timeline.
Never did check out the imgur thing but will get there eventually.

I wanted to take a moment before anything else to thank distractedcarnifex for both starting this tread and generously opening the door to others to post about their progress here as well. Reading about the progress of other work has kept me on track and broadened my own perspective. This has been a huge help in keeping me motivated and on track with my painting, research, and experiments since New Year's.
The armiger is done! There are a few additions I could make but will leave them for now. Again, the goal is to achieve a level of finish beyond what I have previously done while not getting bogged down in minscule details better suited to painting competitions. It did take me a couple of days longer than expected but that was caused by some new products and mistakes in my use of them. The following are new to me if not to you.
New product: Woodland Scenics Realistic Water. This does provide a glass-like water once cured (24 hours) and is very easy to use. Crystal clear, which caused an "oh f**k" moment when I realized I got ahead of myself and forgot to paint in transition bands before I did my pour.
New product: Woodland Scenics Water Ripples. Stipples on easily and will give you a nice effect on water. I needed something more to fix my problem so I moved on the next item.
New product: Woodland Scenics Water Effects. This one I like a lot. Comes in a squeeze bottle which gives you a lot of control. I was able to apply, brush, stipple, and the next day my "oh f**k" moment was largely gone. I had an effect that camouflaged it with what could be called either a rippling effect like the armiger's movement disturbed the water or a shattered ice effect. Not sure which but after dry brushing it I'm a lot happier. Also good if you want to create waterfalls or icicles.
If interested in any of these or any other products I mention, ask Nexus if they can get them in. If you know of better versions, please post in this thread so I can check them out. You may be able to get these thru the Leading Edge Facebook page as well. I prefer to buy local if possible, favouring Nexus of course. If not, Kingdom of the Titans carries Woodland Scenics water products and does free shipping on orders over $80. They are a Canadian company based in Quebec. Otherwise I will try to include a link to the company I acquired products from.
I've decided that a year's goal such as Shannon has is a good idea. Not so ambitious as his 12K but rather more manageable for me. I am aiming for 52 units for 2022. That may be a character, combat squad, vehicle, etc. but it has to be a legal unit. Monsters will count for 2 weeks, titanic for 3 weeks. Those expectation may or may not be reasonable but time will tell. At the end of the year I will add up the points and see what it all is worth.
Now that I've probably bit off more than I can chew publicly, on to the the next project. A Forge World Scorpius with after-market DA doors.

Trying new things is scary, especially on big models, but I guess its how we grow as hobbyists! Get that 52 unit goal!
So I didn't hobby on Valentines Day. Tuesday was a bad day at work and I just wasn't feeling it. So I restarted my Hobby Streak on Wednesday after two days of no hobby. I also painted a night scene with oils following along with Bob Ross to get my hobby mojo back:
Day 1: Airbrush undercoat on Heavy Destroyer//Aggrellan earth effect and Watcher in the Dark Day 2: Airbrush basecoat on Watcher in the Dark//Shade on Watcher//Painted a night scene with Bob Ross Day 3: Painted details on Watcher//finished up the base for Clubs Day 4: Wiped out by Clubs but I laid down an airbrush basecoat on the Heavy Destroyer Day 5: Wiped out again by Clubs Day 2 but fixed some errors on the basecoat and applied shade Day 6: Changed gears - Assembled an AOS Stormdrake Guard - work on second one tomorrow
The Stormdrake Guard will likely occupy me for two weeks. The last two I painted were over the holidays. Got to get them ready for the AOS tourney on 13 March!

That Scorpius is still sitting on the work bench, staring at me accusingly for ignoring it this past week. I do have a reason for that.
A few weeks ago, I was asked to display some examples of our hobby for my son's adult developmental program (currently virtual due to Covid). I was asked how long it took to paint a single miniature. All that I could manage was an estimate because I had either: a) never tracked the time, or b) almost always have worked on multiple units at any given time. The person asking has been away from program since and is returning on Monday. Now that I have my tracker up and running I decided to find out. The armiger wound up being worked on exclusively much to my surprise so that one was in the bag for an answer. But it wasn't what they were asking about. They were focused on the regular space marine /guardsman-sized models.
I acquired an old school Callidus assassin back when it wasn't old school. Old enough to be metal and slotta-base. (Hey, my avatar is a pretty accurate representation of the real thing.) It has waited a very long time and seemed a good choice for answering the question. Moderate detailing and the right size for the question. Both it and the armiger are 100% brush work so they are comparable in that from the moment the paint hit the mini. By the time I was done, I had spent 3 hours on the Callidus this week, plus time for miscellaneous hobby stuff. I spent 13 hours on the armiger.
So why did I spend the time telling you all of this? Because now I can break down my time to a single miniature if I want to. The tracker works on a number of levels. Some, like this, are unexpected. It sent me off on a divergent path where I completed a long overlooked model, got a better sense of how I consume my time on character and vehicle models, and reminded me not to get too fixated on what models I work on if I don't have a deadline to hit. On the whole, both a pleasant and pleasantly unexpected detour.
Now, that Scorpius is on the bench right behind me and I can feel it giving me the hairy eyeball. Time to give it my attention.

Crazy week at work due to what's going on in the world, but fenced off time each day to hobby:
Day 7:Started assembly on 2nd Stormdrake Guard Day 8: Finished assembly on 2nd Stormdrake Guard Day 9: Airbrush undercoat on Stormdrake Guard/ Dry brush two colours on Heavy Destroyer Day 10: Airbrush basecoat on Stormdrake Guard Day 11: Switched gears - Blue on weapons on Heavy Destroyer Day 12: Highlight Airbrush on Stormdrake Guard
Will keep on working on the Stormdrake Guard this week, with maybe one evening dedicated to finishing the Heavy Destroyer. Once the base/highlight draconith colours are down it pays to go slow on everything else.

Between Zoom sessions, helping my brother move, and hosting a family birthday celebration I got a whopping 45 minutes in this week. Not quite a total write off. The Scorpius is being scuffed up as I want to try a grubby winter warfare look, complete with mud, snow, and ice. Better luck this week I hope.

Busy week at work, but carved out time in the evenings for hobby:
Day 13: Shade on Stormdrake Guard Upper body Day 14: Basecoat on Stormdrake Guard riders Day 15: Gold on Stormdrake Guard Day 16: Finished Lokhust Heavy Destroyer Day 17: Shade on Stormdrake Guard lower body plus hair (I think its hair?) plus touch up on mistakes. Assembled bases Day 18: Gold and Dark Brown on Stormdrake Guard armour/saddles Day 19: Blue on Stormdrake Guard// Wash on Stormdrake riders
Next week I will finish the Stormdrake Guard in preparation for the tourney in two weeks. The details on the riders will take a bit, but there are only two of them!

I definitely haven't managed any impressive streaks, but I have been chipping away fairly steadily.
My current method is to paint a thing while loading between battle and campaign maps in total warhammer 3. Playing khorne, so there are A LOT of battles. Is this efficient? Very much no. But it keeps the hobby going in spite of my current video game addiction.
It's also helping me not rush through this character that I'm painting. As difficult a time as I have with putting too much effort into a lot of my hordy troops, I also struggle with taking that extra step to put a little more effort into the characters. I paints how I paints.
This shaggoth isn't going to win any contests, but he's a conversion that I'm happy with, so I think he deserves the extra attention. So for now, I'm not worried about how long it takes, or how many models I get finished this month. Even if my pace is glacial, there's still progress, and it still counts!

In the end you have to be satisfied with what you are producing. If glacial works, glacial it is.

Hey, this is a fun thread. Dana's content is great, it's to bad it seems to have slowed down a bit (I can only imagine how time consuming content creation is). I'm down for for some self imposed accountability - even if it helps put one coat of a paint on a night I think that's a win.
1. Recently finished a cauldron of blood, melusai ironscale and a slaughter queen. 2. Primed a group of blood sisters 3. Started building 5 more snake ladies to be ready for the tournament.
Next, will need to build up a unit of khinarai. I don't know if I'll be able to hit 52 units in the year, but it's worth a shot.

'"(-_-)a my whole army is painted one layer a night lol. but it gets itdone. One layer over a whole army each night! That sounds like a huge batch painting project. I have done about 60 skeletons at once for Kings of War. It was a tough slog, but so rewarding when they were close to being done.

I meant like, 1 squad or group at a time, but yeah basically a layer a night, maybe like 30minutes if I can. I think I have maybe 1100pts of chaos painted, and maybe 600pts of space wolves. and it's taken me almost 2 years to give u an idea of how slow I work lol
