1. what things did you like about the tourney? - I liked the vastly different, well thought out inventive armies I went up against not to mention the esprit de corps of everyone involved; it's nice to come to a tournament and not feel like a piece of trash if you lose because your opponent just lays into you like a schoolyard bully with every unit they drop. (this actually happened in a tournament in Syracuse)
2. what things didn't you like about the tourney? - Lost Temple, it didn't happen to me, but I heard more than one story about a player drawing the card to kill the enemy commander, then the commander didn't show up till late game. On missions that have a requirement to kill/protect/etc any unit in your army or the opposing army, that unit should be on the board from the beginning.
3. favourite scenarios that you played? - I enjoyed Hammer and Ambull, Demon World, and all of the missions that had moving objectives. I would have liked to play on the zombie board, but I understand why my army was kept well away from that scenario.
4. scenarios you played that you didn't like at all? - As stated above, The temple; I just didn't like anything about that mission.
5. thoughts on the swag? - The dog tags are cool, really it's "free" stuff and we shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth
6. thoughts on the prize pool? - I like the ticket draw thing, it makes it a level playing field for people to win prizes. Maybe have more gift certificates next year though in smaller amounts because there was really only one prize I wanted out of the whole spread. I realize pleasing one person in particular wasn't and shouldn't ever be the aim of a tournament organizer, certificates would allow for a larger prize pool.
7. suggestions for next year? - Sink the Titan and no lost temple!

Six games of 40k are fun everyone's army was painted also fun, and I didn't play against cardboard vindicators! Standing for two days is a little rough and I didn't win a prize at the end! But seriously, dave crushed me with reserves with -1 to all my rolls and when I only got my troops meant that I didn't have any long range fire support and with bad rolls nothing came in. Had stuff come in it would've been a different game and we likely would've drawn (if everything came in on parity with his stuff I think I would've won) but it's a dice game and if it wasn't we wouldn't play it so them is the breaks, was still a fun and close game it was just annoying being on the back foot because reserves. But having the whole tourney gimped (a lot of scenarios had forced reserves) by a warlord trait is probably something that needs to be considered in the future. Especially since he almost considered master of the fleet so +1 for him and another -1 to you. Since dave is such a nice guy he didn't take it though. From what I played, temple of doom but I think it's too hard to unlock since we only had one objective unlock. I also really liked the pilot running away from the scary necrons, only to get beat down by incubi Power Struggle. Wheee I get to deploy half my army (or less than) and then it gets shot before turn 1 even starts. Even though I was lucky and had a good match-up I still didn't enjoy being shot at for free for two turns without anything to really do about it. I also suspect my opponent did not enjoy ambulls since they tied up his command squad and ate a bunch of tanks + kroot, seems way too random for a tournament. Dice are cool, bag is cool, the dogtags will never be relevant again (to me) but the engraving was humorous. They also jingled a lot which I often was annoyed by. I guess I am using the chain now for one of my other necklaces... so cool chains! Good prizes nothing was super interesting to me, in my opinion it looked like a pile of stuff that wasn't selling, the $$$ were definitely there though. Checkboard those table DZs so nobody has their backs to each other if they play at nearby tables (ie dawn of war shouldn't be beside each other with the long table edges oriented towards each other) Now that I've read everyone's posts I did hear a lot of complaints about zombies because it was an almost guaranteed auto-tie. I am also disappointed in the amount of garbage (even today there was leftover mcdonalds bags, c'mon guys is it so hard to clean up after yourselves?). As far as dice goes I love them, I loved them. Before the tourney I set aside all the dice I would use and I didn't bother with most of them (except for the venom dice and the raider warrior dice) because I wanted to roll the new dice. But since I'm an RPG player first and I trade dice and love new and unique dice (and not a dirty wargammer who only wants sets and never trades) I'm super biased towards dice. I loved the colours and the variance amongst the different kinds, I only wish that more people were open to trading so I could get some more! I got three super awesome purple sparkley ones from LizardTau in a trade today (thanks again! they look so good!) and day two hizack gave me two which I affectionately refer to as the Elysian dice! Out of the all my swag these dice will see WAY more use (I have a bajillion dice bags and if I need more I'll get some Crown). I'm curious whether the people who are complaining about the dice legitimately cherish the dog-tags more? Maybe I'm just too pragmatic? I was pretty excited for mugs (or steins maybe?) since then I could drink the blood of my enemies (red wine) from my awesome 2013 nexus championship mug but I'll survive. Still had a good time. On the topic of prize support for performance awards: No. What I most enjoyed about the tournament was playing games, sure I did well and placed decently but I never once had to consider WAAC to get a prize, the end-tourney draw is what takes all the stress out of the tourney scenario, because there aren't prizes for top placements there isn't any pressure (in my opinion) on playing the games. As soon as there's pressure to win on the game, those two hours would be so stressful. Every delayed roll, decision or deployment would be so much more irritating. Since all the prize support is in the draw the games are just that, games for fun and bragging rights. Revisiting my opinion about prize support, that's just how I personally felt, but everyone else seems really happy with it so I'm sure it's fine and I'm just weird. Yeah Ambull looks so cool I wish I had play it haha... Chain sword next year would be awesome! Hey man, if you come out any given Saturday it's pretty simple. Victory points with seven ambulls that deep strike the center of the board, scatter 6d6, assault at I10 from deep strike (if they hit something) and at the start of every game turn they move and assault the closest non-ambull unit. WS5, S5, T5, I5, W3, Fearless.

zombies wasn't an auto-tie... happened twice out of six games.... keep pointing that out...
pile of stuff that wasn't selling? yeah a limited edition codex, a brand new flyer kit that just came out, a brand new roleplaying 40k book that even the person who won the $200 prize even bought with his winnings, a huge hobby set that the person who won it put ALL his tickets in he wanted it the most... yeah... nice...
what's that you were saying about not looking a gift horse in the mouth? Glad we didn't burden you with any of these "leftover" prizes.

I'm not going to argue because I believe what I said and I would stand by it. Everyone is happy and that's all that matters, the ticket system means if there were prizes that I wasn't interested in I didn't put a ticket in the box so I couldn't deny a prize from someone who wanted it.
Everyone is happy with their prizes and everyone else is happy with the selection so clearly I am an outlier but I'm not going to censor myself. At the end of the day I played 6 great games of 40k, did well and there's not much more I can ask for.

I dissagree with you on the prize pool Alex but I understand how you feel when you are the only one thinking one way haha...
I would like to tell you that even if they was no bolter for Best overall I will still be stress and want to win the final because Im like that I want to win in anything I do so not everybody is the same, Im a true competitor in everything I do but a true competitor will also accept the lost no matter what. So the end-tourney draw doesnt change anything for me at the end.
Im sure Im not the only one like that but I will be the only one to admit it because its not cool to say you are competitor...

In this case it's better that I'm the only one thinking that way You did point out a lot of good reasons for tourney performance prize support but at the end of the day it's Shannon's tourney and of course you're not the only one who's a competitor, tons of people have the mantra "I'm going for best general." I'm curious who the top 10 with battlepoints were.

Im going for Best Overall because painting is a big part of our hobby and even if Im ok in painting Im putting the effort to finish my army to be a couple points from the best painting score and try to compensate on the battle point.
Like you said at the end its Shannons tourney and we are giving our opinion like he asked.

1)
The tournament ran really smoothly, we got started on time both days, and we were done by 5:30 both days. I was very happy about this. Great job on this.
Draw for prizes is imo the best thing we've done to tournaments locally, it really makes people chill out I think when they know winning only nets your bragging rights and they aren't trying to be WAAC to win that $200 bucks (or whatever)
Mike was extremely generous with prize support, and there was some seriously cool stuff.
2)
Terrain wasn't awful, the 25% rule does still work in 6th, and I feel like it was definitely playable, but I can't help but think a couple of the tables were a little sparse. when I was looking around day 1 I did think about saying something, but that was my mistake to not of mentioned it. The only tables I thought were a little too sparse were Power Struggle and Sink the Banblade (which I didn't get to play, so I can't really comment)
Maybe bumping up to 30% or 33% would improve terrain next year.
Dave's F*%#%^%@ Doom Scythe. Lol.
3 & 4)
All the scenarios I played I felt were fair and balanced, zero complaints. One thing I think was very important was READING THE SCENARIOS. Nsc didn't fully read voidspan point against me, and when I used the jump rule to close in and rough him up quite a bit, he was kinda shocked.
Having the scenarios posted before hand, and encouraging everyone to read them, as well as possibly having 2 copies available at each table might improve this in future. But you can lead a horse to water, and he still won't drink.
Lastly, I don't want to say "I told you so" about power struggle, but Matt's feelings are the same as mine about that one from last year. It needs a big re-work or to be removed imo.
5)
The Dog Tags are very cool, they are going in my 40k box and I will be wearing them when I play whenever I can. For me the Dice were ok, but I really appreciated the Dice Bag.
6)
Prize support was very cool, and by no means is the following a complaint. I appreciate that you guys choose to give away rare/valuable/expensive prizes, but I would appreciate if maybe the prize pool had a few more (less expensive) items, It's great to be that guy who wins a $200 dollar item, but I would rather see 6-8 people win $30-50 dollar items instead of 3-4 people winning expensive items.
7)
Not sure about this one yet, I'll edit or post up once I've had some more time to reflect. But one thing is for sure, this was a pretty awesome tournament, in fact it's probably the best one I've ever been to.

1. what things did you like about the tourney? All the painted armies. The sportsmanship and hearing the battle stories from others. I also enjoyed the fact that the prizes were not based on performance but rather random chance from a ticket draw which demoted the waac mentality.
2. what things didn't you like about the tourney? The terrain. Maybe I am just use to seeing it piled on most games but I expected a lot more terrain and gimped myself by giving my HQ the move threw cover for all units withing 12" which I think was utilized for a total of three moves out of the six games.
Force reserves was something that was obnoxious. Without the warlord trait to help my reserve roll which I decided to not take against my better judgement made two of the three forced reserve games played kind of one sided when only one extra unit out of a possible 7/8 made it on.
3. favourite scenarios that you played? Temple of Doom was great fun. It was a new dynamic that required a little bit more long term planning in terms of do I shoot now or do I hope to unlock it and divert more units to other objectives instead of going for the stacking bonus to reduce the difficulty.
Hammer and Anbull despite the ambulls tying up two dreads, killing one and occupying my squad with my HQ. It is a new kind of challenge not only trying to fight off your enemy but also having to manage your troops and make the decision of shooting the enemy this turn or shooting/assaulting an ambull before it can occupy more of your phases.
4. scenarios you played that you didn't like at all? All of the scenarios had annoying or aggravating nuances but they were balanced by solid rules. I cant say I really disliked any scenario to the point I would not voluntarily play them again.
5. thoughts on the swag? Loved the dice and the dice bag. I liked the tags as they serve as a memento of my first 40k tournament. Unfortunately they will probably be lost in a box of bits to be lost in the warp. A mug or a shotglass with the same phrase would have kicked ass and I could leave it on my desk at work to remind me of the epic time I had.
6. thoughts on the prize pool? No complaints. I think splitting the $200.00 prize into two would have been better.
7. suggestions for next year? More time between games. It was rough when you did not finish until dice down were called and you had to risk missing the announcements/pairings while waiting to hit the toilet. Maybe giving ten minutes after the games end so everyone has a change to bio break/grab a snack/check emails etc.

1. what things did you like about the tourney? Tourney was a great success!! Lots of different armies, fun games and great people to play against. The 3 colour min (to force us to finish painting the armies) should be kept but I wouldn't go any further - you have a painting category for that. 2. what things didn't you like about the tourney? Personally I think 2 hours for a 2000 point game with scenarios that are unusual that need to be read carefully is insufficient (and because of hurrying I'm sure many people misread some of the scenarios - at least from the comments I heard at how some of them were played). Some of my games were completed but most did not finish. From listening to others many other games did not get completed - and some of the outcomes of these games might be very different if the game could be completed or could have gone on 1-2 turns further to a more clear ending. Either add another 30minutes to the games (not easy) or I would suggest changing to a 1500 point tourney (1750 tops).
3. favourite scenarios that you played? I liked all the scenarios, particularly Temple of Doom (though I made a mistake thinking all units that unlock a temple could also claim it)
4. scenarios you played that you didn't like at all? I played Ray in the Sandstorm mission on one of the big beautiful terrain laden tables with the large buildings. The play area was 5ft long table instead of 6 because the one side wasn't suitable to use and then deployment was vanguard so a shorter deployment area with giant buildings that took up a lot of space. In future I if using those tables (and whether using only 5ft) I would not use vanguard deployment as it reduces the deployment space too much on a great looking board but one where it is hard to place/move things (models falling over from all the debris they have to stand on).
I could also see the Baneblade scenario going or being adjusted. The baneblade was a big concern but didn't do too much because we toasted it quickly.
5. thoughts on the swag? Love getting dice! Dog tags were interesting. Maybe next year mugs?
6. thoughts on the prize pool? Random prizes are still a good idea for most stuff, IMO. Trophies for the winners is fine. However, I do see a case for those that would rather have gift certificates/kits rather than a trophy. The problem is that the trophy is a symbol of the win - what do you replace it with that would have the same impact? If money/kits, the same as the random stuff, you run into the problem of the winners either getting a small 'something' of the same type that random players are getting in the draw (which would seem to diminish the win), which may cause a feeling that the winner prizes should be bigger than any random item which will end up drastically reducing/eliminating the random stuff. Personally I would keep it the same but it is an interesting discussion.
7. suggestions for next year? Main suggestions would be to reduce the tourney point level to 1500. This does a few things - makes it easier to finish games, less room needed to armies when moving around/setting up, less to paint (maybe more details will be added to units and maybe more people will make display boards?).

I said I would not comment on this tourny. I do however need to jump in on one thing. I know this will be a heartache with a lot of people but maybe we can start a poll and see what the people think, you know, like democracy.
I am a strong advocate for 1500 points or less like 1250. Here are my reasons why.
1. Its less to paint, that alone should help out a lot of people. 2. Most tournys around the world are 1500 point or less. I am not talking about the big ones but the average tourny in the UK is 1000 to 1500 points. In Germany the standard is 1500 points. Here in Canada, in Alberta the standard was 1850 for a long time now its 1500. 3. Games will go by quicker. 4. People then have to plan their lists a little different than the standard Saturday afternoon. 5. Its easier to start a new army as you would have less to purchase.
That's all I am gonna say. I am gonna start a poll under 40k. Its only gonna help the TO(Shannon) for next year.
Mike
